Choosing Life: The Tongue as a Fountain of Blessing

February 4, 2024

Dear brothers and sisters, as we conclude our series on “The Power of the Tongue,” let us focus on the choice before us – the choice to speak life and be a fountain of blessing to those around us.

“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” – Deuteronomy 30:19 (NKJV)

Blessing others is not just a kind gesture; it is a prophetic act. Our words can shape the destinies of those we encounter. Today, we’ll explore biblical examples of individuals who spoke blessings, invoking positive change in the lives of others.

In the Scriptures, we find stories of patriarchs and prophets speaking blessings over their descendants, and in doing so, releasing God’s favor and purpose. Our words have the power to influence the course of someone’s life. As we speak blessings, we align ourselves with God’s desire for abundance and goodness.

Acknowledging the potential for our words to bring either life or death, we must actively break the cycle of negative speech. Prayer, repentance, and intentional efforts to speak blessings can transform our speech patterns. By choosing to bless, we participate in God’s redemptive work, breaking the chains of negativity and releasing the power of His grace.

Gratitude is a powerful language of blessing. A heart filled with gratitude overflows with words that bring life and joy. We’ll explore how cultivating a thankful heart influences the words we speak and the atmosphere we create. In choosing to express gratitude, we not only bless others but also contribute to a culture of positivity and encouragement.

In closing, let us heed the wisdom of Proverbs 18:21 and recognize the weight, creativity, and choice inherent in our speech. May our tongues be instruments of life, pouring forth blessings that echo God’s love and grace. As we choose life in our words, we align ourselves with the divine purpose of bringing light and hope to a world in need.

May the Holy Spirit empower us to be intentional with our speech, choosing life, and being conduits of God’s blessings to those around us. Amen.
