Words That Wound, Words That Heal

January 21, 2024

Good morning/afternoon/evening, beloved. Today, we embark on a three-part journey exploring the profound wisdom found in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Our words hold incredible power – the power to uplift, to encourage, to heal, but also the power to wound, to hurt, and even to bring destruction.

Greetings, brothers and sisters. Let us open our hearts to the Word of God as we delve into the first part of our series, “Words That Wound, Words That Heal.”

Proverbs 18:21 reminds us of the weightiness of our words, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Our words have a profound impact, reaching beyond the moment they are spoken.

Our words have a weightiness that extends far beyond the immediate moment. How we speak to others, the words we choose, and the tone we use can impact not only their emotions but also their sense of self-worth.

Now, let’s reflect on the destructive power of words. Gossip, criticism, and words spoken in anger can wound deeply. The wounds inflicted by hurtful words can last far longer than physical wounds, affecting relationships, self-esteem, and spiritual well-being.

I remember a time when harsh words wounded me deeply. It took a toll on my mental and emotional well-being, and it affected my relationships. Yet, on the flip side, our words can be a source of healing. Encouragement, kindness, and expressions of love have the power to mend broken hearts and restore hope. God’s Word is a powerful example of words that bring life. We’ll explore passages that offer comfort, hope, and restoration. Let’s turn to the Scriptures to see how God’s words can inspire us to use our own words wisely.

As we close this first part of our series, let us reflect on our own words. Are we contributing to the life-giving force of our tongue, or are we, perhaps unintentionally, causing harm? May we seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to use our words wisely, understanding the impact they have on those around us.

Join us next week for Part 2 as we continue to explore “The Power of the Tongue.” May God’s grace be with you until we gather again. Amen.
